Patented solutions from our team of innovators

Our goal is to create better packaging and testing solutions for a safer patient environment. We have developed a packaging machine that creates a process firewall to help prevent compromised medical device from reaching the sterile field. In our laboratory we have created a visual inspection device to standardize and improve medical device pouch seal inspection.

Packaging innovation in a Danish American town

Van der Stähl Scientific belongs here, as Americans with a Dutch (not Danish) heritage, the windmills and fine pastries sing to our European roots. It is not surprising that Solvang is often called the “Dutch town” and the two cultures in many ways are very similar. Solvang is a great place to raise a family and a perfect spot for our company to imagine new products for the medical device industry.

Better packaging ideas born from a hiking trail

We discovered early on, that a rested mind engenders better ideas and it is still the core of our business philosophy today. Hiking thousands of miles on single tracks has inspired us to create packaging systems that are saving lives. Now on the coastal range we hike new trails that will invoke the next big thing in medical device packaging. Our daily hikes, we believe, make us a better company.

Helping to feed our local community and beyond

We have donated packaging machinery to organizations like “feed my starving children” a nonprofit organization that has delivered urgent food supplies to over 70 countries. Locally we provide boxes to “Veggie Rescue”, this amazing organization volunteers harvest missed vegetables from the many local fields. The fresh vegetables are redirects to our schools, seniors and the needy.

Get to know the people behind the product

We are an exuberant group of technologists that believe happy and healthy individuals engender a better customer experience. We are a family owned company with an impressive reach, as we are a key link in hundreds of millions of sterile transfers each year worldwide. Through our ISO 17025 accredited laboratory we are a key vendor for esteemed organizations such as Medtronic, the Center for disease control (CDC), the Department of Defense, NASA , as well as most of the worlds largest medical device manufacturers. All of our technological prowess is delivered through our interface that is customer centered at every touch point. Please take a moment to look into our lives and get to know the people behind the products and services.

Smart Ideas in Packaging

Not all of our innovation are a matter of life or death, sometimes they’re just sensible improvements. This past year, frustrated by our own experience with ice cream bulging out of half gallon containers at the supermarket, we patented a better idea. Our “Grow Carton®” will allow for expansion during shipment to higher elevations. Not only will this help ice cream producers thwart revenue losses, the Grow Carton will also provide a safer and cleaner product to the consumer. This is a perfect example of our simple yet meaningful innovation vision.

Solvang, more than just wine tasting and Aebleskiver’s

Yes, we have some amazing wine makers here in the Santa Ynez valley, and a trip to Solvang is just not complete unless powdered sugar is on your shirt from devouring an Aebleskiver. But our valley is more than just a tourist stop off the 101. Dig a bit deeper and enjoy some amazing hiking in the Los Padres National forest or visit one of our many museums in the valley.

Living the good life in Solvang…

When I was in college in San Luis Obispo, Solvang was a short drive and a nice day trip mini vacation. That was 35 years ago and happily little has changed in this Danish detour off the 101. The town of Solvang was founded in 1911 by Danes wishing to establish a Danish Colony in the more favorable California climate, in fact the word “Solvang” means “Sunny field”.  When in Solvang you may feel civilization is thousands of miles away, and yet Los Angeles lives a mere 132 miles to the south. The town and the people seem to have a country meets Santa Barbara chic with a twist of Scandinavia vibe. With more than 100 wineries Solvang has become a legit player in the California wine industry and now home to sterile packaging technology.

Technology from the Trail

Our company was founded more than 20 years ago in a small cabin high in the San Gabriel Mountains in California. We started this journey at 6000 ft and now we have moved west to the beautiful central coast of California. Many new innovations are being pondered as we hike the California coastal range Mountains. From the very beginning hiking and the outdoors have been a huge part of the culture at our firm. Maybe it is the 300 plus days of sunshine we enjoy in the Santa Ynez valley that creates a mystical mix of technological alchemy on our hiking trails. We discovered early on, that a rested mind engenders better ideas, and it is still the core of our business philosophy today. Hiking thousands of miles, our energetic and focused free-range meetings, we have developed patented systems that have changed the way the nations leading medical device companies package their instruments. Not all great ideas are borne in boardrooms; some ideas are imagined by friends in hiking boots.

Outdoors: Our way of life…

Many of the patented technologies you have seen on our site today have been borne from our morning hikes. We will never forget the day we noticed how the low angle of light from the autumn sun created shadows on the small rocks on our hiking trail. This awareness led to the low angle lighting system we development with our VIU system, a device developed for the visual evaluation of sterile pouches. Many new innovations are being pondered as we hike the California coastal range, innovations that will explore technology to assure patient safety.

In a age of web enabled doorbell cameras, wrist computers and self parking cars, our innovation group is always surprised at the slow evolution of medical device packaging machinery. As our group explores new smart medical device packaging technologies, we will continue to unlock better ways to package medical devices. Systems such as our MS-451 medical pouch sealer and package integrity laboratory are leading the way to greater patient safety. Not only is our machinery technologically advanced, it is also robustly built to provide years of trouble-free service.
If you are an ISO 13485 medical device manufacturer then you know the value of working with ISO accredited vendors. Our ISO 17025 accredited laboratory provides our customers with traceable machine calibrations and pouch testing services. Our medical device packaging machinery and medical device pouch testing devices ships with an NIST traceable certificate. We are also able to perform seal strength testing in order to help fast-track your validation and provide a third-party data pack for your installation qualification. Working with an accredited vendor partner is the pathway to compliance.
Our expertise is focused on medical device packaging and medical device pouch testing. Some packaging machinery companies cast a wide net by providing packaging machinery for multiple industries. The science and technology to package popcorn is very different than packaging a sterile medical device. We understand the regulatory girth that surrounds the arduous task of medical device packaging validation. There is multiple benefits in working with a company with a focused discipline. Our goal is to not be everything to everyone, simply put our mission is medical device packaging, period.

Supporting better nutrition in our community and beyond…

John Bunyan said “You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.” Our goal is to promote causes that we wholeheartedly believe are making a difference. We support these organizations and hope you will as well. We donate packaging machinery to “Feed the Starving Children” a world hunger relief organizations so they can do their outstanding work of bringing needed food to the world’s most malnourished. Locally we help “veggie rescue” with their amazing mission of redirecting vegetables from the fields, to the needy in our community.
